Art Islands

2 days

There is no need to be into art to enjoy the installations and museums on the so-called Art islands Naoshima and Teshima. Most of the artworks are experiences in and of themselves. An added bonus is that photography is prohibited in some of the museums which meant we were mind blown on more than one occasion. Quite the achievement in this day and age. Our highlights are the Chichu Art Museum, Art House Project: Minamidera and the Teshima Art Museum.

Since the islands are already fully booked, and probably also out of our budget, we stay in Uno and enjoy the peaceful ferry rides to the islands.

We visit Naoshima on foot which is doable if you are okay with skipping some of the venues. We book most tickets online on our first day in Naoshima which works out fine since it is low season. For a couple of the Art House Project installations however, there are no more available slots. On Teshima we rent electric bicycles close to the harbour to go between sites as they are quite far apart.
