Hiroshima

2 days

Our plan is to cross from Fukuoka to Busan by ferryboat. There is a Sumo tournament in Fukuoka which is unfortunately out of our budget. And so are the hotels. Everything is either fully booked or prices are insane. So we decide to stay in Hiroshima and take the shinkanzen to Fukuoka in the morning.

We thought there would be a convenience store at Hakata port but boy were we wrong. Our only lunch option is the cheapest overpriced cookies at a gift shop. Cat-shaped. When we get onto the ship we realize we can only pay for food in cash. Which is of course what we tried to leave Japan without. As if it is our lucky day we find a frozen karaage chicken in the slot of one of the vending machines. And no one seems after it. Feeling like two beggars, we shamefully microwave the chicken and share it between us. How very unjapanese of us.

10 minutes in the not-so-silent silent room and I feel the open sea wants to punish me for that karaage chicken. Before losing my few stomach contents, I lay down on the primitive cot on the floor. Hours later, I wake up next to my better half who is then sick from not eating enough. No better way to enter South Korea than with an empty stomach.
