We are Jasper and Barbara and we created this website as a means to inspire anyone who likes to travel the same way we do.  We prefer to travel low budget, staying in guesthouses and taking public transport.

While we love nature and mountains a city with a good antique market, book shops, brutalist architecture and local food is just as high on our list.

The images you see are our view on the places we have seen and the people we have met.

STRAIGHT FROM THE airplane onto the Malagasy roads can be tough for those who suffer from car sickness. Although all the suffering is worth it in the end. Trekking through Andringitra and reaching ‘Pic Bobby’, high-fiving ring-tailed lemurs and seeing baobabs in the last daylight are some of the most beautiful things we ever got to experience.

It is no piece of cake to cross this wonderful country, but it is by crossing it that we got to see the small villages on the red sand, people mining for gold and many young children who walk many miles to school each day.

Trek in Andringitra national park

Trekking in Andringitra is a non-negiotable when visiting Madagascar. The park hosts some of the country's most beautiful views and is only accessible with a guide (and porters). A truly remarkable experience shared with people who genuinely want to make the time together unforgettable. Once the local rum appears, the dancing and singing can begin.

Camp Catta

Staying at this hotel, you will without a doubt encounter ringtail makis going about their business. We slept in our tent after the trek and saw them bouncing off the roofs or on the pathways more than once.

Mofu balls for breakfast

Quick and easy and sold on the streets of every village. Our favourites were the sweet and salty doughballs.

Avenue des baobabs

The baobab is one of Madagascar's iconic landmarks. Although you can see a solitary tree here and there along the road, we really wanted to admire them on the famous avenue des baobabs. Along with all the tourists in the region, we gathered at the famous avenue before sunset and enjoyed the spectacle.

food

Mofo balls: fried rice flour balls. This breakfast favourite is mostly slightly sweetened but the version with both sugar and salt was our favourite

Mofo gasy: rice flour pancakes, typical breakfast streetfood

Koba: a mix of ground peanuts, sugar and rice flour steamed in bananaleaves

Brochettes: grilled zebu meat like heart and testicles on little skewers

Mofo anana: vegetables fried in batter

Mofo akondro: banana fritters

A meal in a hotely: these roadside restaurants offer delicious meat with rice and sometimes added vegetables. In our opinion these our much tastier options than in touristy restaurants for a fraction of the price

Ranovola: burnt rice tea. Always complimentary in a hotely
