Colombo

Colombo will be a Geoffrey Bawa-themed destination for us. We spend a day at Bentota where we visit his Lunuganga estate. A meticilously designed countryside getaway on a former rubber plantation. We did not take the famous train from Ella to Kandy but we still want to have experienced the trains in Sri Lanka. So this is our chance. In third class.
We are squeezed together for the better half of the one and a half hour ride but eventually beautiful beachscapes roll through the open doorway. For the trip back we are lucky enough to meet some friendly women who offer us a ride back to Colombo and a very interesting conversation.
In Colombo we spend our time at the Pettah market and visiting more of Bawa's designs. We have a delicious cake at Bawa's Gallery Cafe before visiting his former house. One of the most inspiring and personal interiors I ever visited.
