Agra

1 day

After early wintertime in the most northern part of India, it is time to explore a better known part of the country. Starting off with one of the wonders of the modern world.

We are lucky that our train ride was confirmed and start our three-hour journey to Agra in an air conditioned sleeper train.

It turns out to be too late to enjoy a view of the Taj Mahal from across the river as I had hoped for. The fatigue hits from our trip up north and we take ample time to have our first hot shower in a week. This is the most luxurious stay on our trip. Unfortunately we cannot enjoy the comfortable bed for long. at 5. 30 we get up for our  walk to the Taj Mahal. witnessing a city waking up, is one of my favourite things. Cows are still sleeping in the streets.

As expected even at this time, a crowd has already gathered at the entry gate. Above heads taking selfies there it is: the Taj Mahal. The sky is pastel coloured. Indian women and men are dressed for the occasion and offer a contrast of bright colours to the red sand stone pathways. Tourists aggressively try to get that money shot..

Apart from the tombs everything about the Taj Mahal is symmetrical. Once it is bathing in sunshine, it stands like sliced butter, the marble is still shiny and its angles still sharp. no trace of erosion.
