Beijing
5 days
We land in Beijing with the necessary apps and VPN sorted so we manage to fix a Didi right away. We seek out old-timey Chinese charm in Beijing’s hutongs, the traditional neighbourhoods that have not yet fallen victim to urban development. Red, blue and green decorations contrast the grey bricks. At the banks of the Qianhai lake, we buy a tanghulu from an auntie and look at winter swimmers taking a plunge under the glow of the wintersun. Everywhere we look, we see people in polyester Manchurian dress taking pictures of each other.
When Jasper's parents arrive in Beijing and have found the right one of the six eponymous hotels, we rush to the Great Wall. We arrive just as the warm sun sinks below the mountains, having the wall all to ourselves.
Besides the tourist attractions, we visit the Red-brick art gallery with its beautiful garden, and the 789 Art District. In the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art there is an exhibition by Belgium’s finest, Luc Tuymans.
With tired legs and a few kilos heavier due to all the delicious food, we set off for Shanghai by train.
