Kashgar

3 days

We successfully crossed the border. Although we had to empty out all of our bags twice, crossing the border was a surprisingly pleasant experience. After weeks of potatoes and vegetable soups we were craving Chinese food. Our visible enthusiasm for the lunch we saw the Chinese borderguards eat, prompted them to share their lunch with us.

A Tajik we meet at the border, arranges a shared taxi for us and two other strangers. This could not have gone any more smoothly. Quite literally. After days in trucks and dusty cars on roads that made me regret not putting on my sports bra, we glide through the mountains in a spacious taxi.

Kashgar, in true Chinese fashion, looks a bit artificial. The ancient Uyghur town does have some great antique shops and we enjoy eating liang pi twice per day.
