Kakheti
1 day
Our connecting flight from Munich to Tbilisi is overbooked and we offer our seats to a mother and child who would otherwise be separated (?!). A day in Munich turned out to be a day in the middle of nowhere far from the city, but at least we are well-rested.
We land in Tbilisi in the early hours of the morning. After a coffee at the airport, we arrange a driver with GoTrip. He takes us to Kakheti, Georgia's wine region. Just before we enter Sighnaghi, he stops. In front of us, we see the vast Alazani Valley with the red-tiled roofs of Sighnaghi in the foreground.
After a hearty breakfast in our cosy old-fashioned guesthouse, we walk to Bodbe Monastery. In the afternoon we are somewhat abducted to the big Kindzmarauli corporation but afterwards the driver finally brings us to the small wine cellar of relatives of our hosts: Nikolashvili. Anna explains everything about her family’s history and we taste the wine, accompanied by sulguni cheese and pickled walnuts. Afterwards we are invited to her cousin’s where we have a look at their vegetable garden and beehives. One of the kids shows us her pig called Peppa. The poor thing does not know yet where Peppa will end up one day.
We end our day eating unrivalled chicken skhmerulli and our first khinkali. The next morning we return to Tbilisi for one day.
