Mt. Olympos
2 days
As soon as we land in Athens we take the train to arrive in Litochoro in the evening. After a quick breakfast we start our hike up Mount Olympos from the Enipeas Gorge. Our hostess gives us a curly cucumber to snack on during the climb. At first the ascent is difficult but after some time we found our rhythm and we hike past blue water, caves, over bridges and take a quick break at the icecold Enipeas waterfall. After the Priona parking lot we are joined by many more hikers, who started from there. The grey sky makes us hurry to the Spilios Agapitos refuge as quickly as possible. When we wolf down our pasta with meatballs in the refuge, we see rain-soaked hikers arriving.
As expected, the night in the dorm is noisy, but after a very refreshing shower with mountain water, we feel revived enough to hike at sunrise. It is a steep ascent to Skala but seeing the golden sun slowly flooding over the mountains is well worth the effort. At the top we are rewarded with a splendid view on Mytikas, the highest peak in Greece. We quickly descend as we see clouds forming. It does not take long until we have to find our way back to the refuge through a cloud of mist. We run down the mountain as quickly as we can and with shaking knees we hitch a ride at the Priona parking lot, back to Litochoro.
