Gyeongju

4 days

We arrive in Gyeongju by bus via Busan. Our first afternoon we spend in the park with tumuli that turned a warm ochre colour from the winters cold.  Persimmon and pomelos hang on leafless trees.

We eat a late lunch in an empty Jungang market. Freshly rolled gimbap and tteokboki finished with a desert of hotteok.  Across the street a man blows a whistle and seconds later a loud bang erupts from his stall. Apparently this is how fresh popcorn is made. We walk through the park to the national museum of Gyeongju which is completely free. The exhibition halls show beautifully displayed artefacts of the Silla kingdom. During our walk to the hotel we stumble into a small but cozy restaurant and after some indecisive pondering, we walk back to go inside. Not a bad decision at all. The spicy stew with shortribs and an addition of cheese are exactly what we needed.

We take a daytrip to Yangdong cultural village where people still live in the century old houses. I especially love the thatched roofs. We spend our last evening in Vinyl Vibe where we pay an entry fee for popcorn, one drink and access to their collection of records.
